Recently had a contractor install a mini split and the owner of the hvac company told me I had to put the disconnect on the mini split. I put it right by the unit in the house about 3 feet away. Can someone tell me if he’s correct because I always thought the disconnect had to be within site

IMO, no disconnect is needed in the house however as long as it is within site and not more than 50' away you are good. You do need a disconnect by the outside unit

Only thing I can think of is if the manufacturer's instructions call for a disconnect to be located at both the exterior and interior unit. When I was doing elec designs, I did see several manufacturer's instructions state that they required disconnects at both units, even when the indoor unit was powered from the outdoor unit.

If the manufacturer's instructions call for it, then it would be required per 110.3(B) correct?

Out doors In site of and less than 50'

Indoors should have a switch IMO as it is a motor driven appliance but I know I am a minority as far as that goes.

Also, on that subject 336.12 says TC cable cannot (in genera) be installed outside of a raceway except in residential applications, and a few other exceptions so how come it is usually used to connect indoor-outdoor ductless splits in commercial applications?

We used to enforce it that way but 422.31(A) often applied so we quit requiring the inside switch.

Change in the '17 Code allows it under certain conditions.{336.10(9)}
