Does anyone know the code relating to disconnecting meter sockets in regards to the distance from the meter socket to the panel. I have been told two different answers by inspectors. When deciding whether or not you need a disconnecting meter socket, do you calculate the length from the meter socket to the panel or is it from the point the conductors enter the building to the panel?

It's usually a POCO requirement.

Most in my area allow an unlimited length outside the building, but a disconnect is required if the length inside the building exceeds 10 feet.

By code, the disconnecting means can be installed outside or inside nearest the point of entrance of the service conductors....

so looks like nearest the point of entrance is up to the guy approving the job.

This is from the 2008. However the nearest point of entry is vague and usually a AHJ decision. Many areas require a disco on the outside before it enters the building (local ordinance)

230.70 General.
Means shall be provided to disconnect all conductors in a building or other structure from the service-entrance conductors.
(A) Location. The service disconnecting means shall be installed in accordance with 230.70(A)(1), (A)(2), and (A)(3).
(1) Readily Accessible Location. The service disconnecting means shall be installed at a readily accessible location either outside of a building or structure or inside nearest the point of entrance of the service conductors.
(2) Bathrooms. Service disconnecting means shall not be installed in bathrooms.
(3) Remote Control. Where a remote control device(s) is used to actuate the service disconnecting means, the service disconnecting means shall be located in accordance with 230.70(A)(1).
