Dishwasher and disposal on same circuit.

I had an inspector tell me that the dishwasher and the disposal cant be on the same dedicated circuit? I havent been able to find this in the code book. Where does it say that this is wrong?

Its a 20 amp circuit. Only the dishwasher and disposal are on the circuit. combined load does not exceed 20 amps. Ispaector claims that these 2 should never be on same circuit period. My understanding was that any fastened in place utilization equipment can be placed on a circuit that supplies lighting/receptacles as long as it does not exceed 50 percent of that circuit. (except either of the small appliance kitchen circuits) I can put fastened in place equipment on the same circuit as long as the total load does not exceed that of the circuit rating. I was under the impression that I could put 3 or 4 on the same circuit as long as they didnt go over the circuit rating?

Have the AHJ give you the article # that he/she feels the supposed violation falls under.

I recently had an inspector tell me that all the kitchen receptacles HAD to be rated 20A because they were on a 20 amp circuit. I told him that I thought he was mistaken and that he was probably thinking of the rating of a single receptacle on an individual branch circuit. A trip out to the car and 5 minutes later he was putting an approved final inspection tag on the panel.
He did say that he had cited another contractor for the same thing and that they installed the 20A devices without question.

The only justification I could see would be if the instructions for either dishwasher or disposal called for a dedicated circuit.

That's a good point. I have had inspectors use that for the fridge circuit. Chances are the specs will call for a dedicated for liability reasons.

But other than that Id say its not necessary.

Tell that inspector the next time you see him that he has my respect. It isn't the mistakes, but the way you deal with them that makes you good at what you do!
