Im a 2nd year apprentice and overheard a debate between two foreman about hard wired dishwashers in a single family dwelling. One says you need a disconnect. The other says you dont and the breaker is the only "disconnect" needed. It turned into a pretty heated discussion. Whos right???

Dishwasher disconnect

In most cases needs a disconnect. Not many panels in the kitchen.
I used to put a SW over the sink along with a SW for a disposal and light
People would get confused about what the SW was for and I have had people call and say the DW wouldn't work and I'd have to tell them about the SW.
A few years ago I started putting an outlet under the sink and a pig tail on the DW and have had no problem.

Regardless of how it is installed, there is a requirement for a disconnecting means for dishwashers. (all appliances require some means of disconnect)

An installer has choices depending on the conditions available to him/her in the field. Check out Part III of Article 422 for the various requirements.

Residential-type hard-wired dishwashers are permitted to have the branch circuit overcurrent protective device serve as the disconnecting means, or a switch located within sight of the dishwasher is another allowable choice, or either of these devices in any acceptable location that is capable of being locked in the "open" position.

If the DW has a switch that qualifies as a 'unit switch'

Few new DWs will have a switch that qualifies.
