Is it required by the NEC that a dishwasher be hooked up with a cord and plug? I have always in the past direct wired the dishwasher.

Re: dishwasher hookup?

i PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT ANY APPLIANCE SHOULD BE A CORD-PLUG SET UP IF FOR NO OTHER REASON SO THAT THEY CAN BE DISCONNECTED FOR REPAIR,REWORK,RECALL BY MANUFACTURERS.
iN ADDITION IT USUALLY MAKES FOR A LARGE DOSE OF COMMON SENSE

Re: dishwasher hookup?

Hmm lets see now, we cannot put a receptacle outlet above lift out tile in a drop ceiling, because flexible cord such as so or sj is no longer allowed canceled above the ceilings(due to its possibility of sheath and conductor insulation dedigration over time.) yet we can conceal a cord behind a dishwasher that is usually fixed into place so long as we drill a hole thru the cabinet and run the cord thru the hole into another cabinet and make the outlet where it is accessible. Me- I personaly don't get that one but hey I do not write the code book I just get to comply with it. My preferred method is to put a switch in the dishwasher circuit located under the sink cabinet, and hardwire the dishwasher with romex downstream of the switch. I leave a long enough tail to allow removal of the dishwasher. The switch is in a direct line of sight of the dishwasher if you open the cabinet door, and it is within 50 foot of the appliance.
