I just visited an overseas installation, all the electrical was installed in accordance with Japanese standards. At the site, they have 208/120v and 480/277v available. They have used the black/red/blue convention to mark the conductors for BOTH systems (208 and 480). When an electrician opens up a safety switch, for example, the wiring is marked with black/red/blue tape irregardless of whether it is a 208 or 480 load. Are the orange/yellow/brown for 480 (and the black/red/blue for 208v) conventions included in the NEC? I looked - could not find anything. Seems to me that there should be a requirement to make the distinction between the two systems. Could it be included in the NESC? Help.

Re: distinguishing between 208v and 480v wiring

There is no required color code for ungrounded conductors in "wye" connected systems. Under certain conditions grounded conductors of different systems must be distinctly identified. [200.6(D)]

If the circuits in question are multiwire branch circuits and there is more than one voltage system in the building, then there is a requirement that the ungrounded conductors be identifed as to phase and voltage. See 210.4(D)
