are there any regulations on where i could put the distribution block.for example can i put it in the side of the encloser if there is no space on the panel or could i put contactors and breakers aswell. i have seen this done before i just need to know are there limits to this by code.

Re: distribution block

If it mounted per manufacturer instructions for orientation and clearances, the mounting surface is suffciently rigid/strong, working clearances are maintained, and the wire bending space is proper the NEC doen't care where things are mounted inside of enclosures.

Re: distribution block

NFPA79

12.12.1.5
Threaded fasteners with machine threads shall be used to attach components to a subplate and shall provide sufficient thread engagement to maintain secure mounting.

So if this is a machine, and thus subject to NFPA79, it would appear you cannot do this.

Re: distribution block

Keep in mind that your question would seem to suggest a need to drill mounting holes in the enclosure, which could be detrimental to the integrity of the enclosure's NEMA rating. Also, there may be bonding specifications that must be maintained.

this encloser is nema 12. the surface is pretty strong i would need 4 holes maybe 3 inch square apart.

Re: distribution block

Bob (petersonra), you are correct NFPA 12.2.1.5 requires a subplate but it does not preclude that subplate from being mounted to an enclosure side wall or door. NFPA 79 is not a required standard although the NEC does reference it for industrial machinery.

Bob (bthielen), all field cut/drilled holes including conduit entries destroy the integrity of an enclosure. It is up to the AHJ to decide if the materials/methods used to "seal" the hole are acceptable for the environment. I just saw a Hoffmann hinge kit mounted through a NEMA 12 enclosure wall where the factory supplied sealing was simply nylon/plastic washers.
