We plan to install I-line square D distribution panel (208/120V,3-Ph, 400A MCB) in a storage. The owner wants this panel to be flush mounted. My understand...if the distribution panel flush mounted, the breakers in panels shall be exposed. Is there a way we can protect people from accidentally turn off breakers? Do they make distribution panel flush mounted with door? Thanks!

couple things, as far as I can tell I-line isnt designed to be flush mounted. They do have fronts with doors, but theyre surface mount.

Second, why use I-line for only 400 amps? You would save alot of money and space with a NQOD instead

I agree I believe I line is generally a residential panel and they do not make tubs for flush mount. like you said they do have doors, it would just be a cosmetic issue with the overhang of the door assembly.

There is no rule one way or the other about the breakers being exposed.

Sure, order the panel with a door.

Sure, just order it that way, I-Line has many cover styles.

But there is also no requirement to use a flush type cover, you can use a surface panel, just have the drywallers install metal edging on the drywall to clean up the look.

I have seen many flush mounted I-Lines

Many places like the flexibility of I-line as you could install any breaker from 15 to 400 amps in that 400 amp panel.

With NQOD your more or less limited to 100 amp or less branch breakers.

I don't think you meant to call I-Line residential.

I-line panels are available with flush mount trims and with the option of doors. (and they have been since they were introduced in the mid 60's).

thanks for correcting me on the flush mount issue. i poured through my sqd catalog and couldnt find flush mount trim, but it was also late....

Can anyone post a link to square-D I-line panel with door option, please!!!

Howdy,

First post, and well look at that it's not, why I'm here, code.

I too have NOT see an I-line with a flush mount trim package. I've been in oodles with I guess I'd call the standard surface mount door package. You can get a 3r cabinet if you're concerned. =)

Oooh I found it... (quickly pulling foot out of mouth)

Page 8-22 in Digest 173.
▲ Add "F" for Flush or "S" for Surface

Looking to the top of the page you add the character to the Front number.

Digest 174
Page 9-20 and 9-21

Each trim part number must be completed by adding an F for flush or an S for surface after the letter T in the part number. Add the suffix letter D if you want a door.

For example:
HCM64TS - surface trim for 26"w x 64"h box
HCM64TSD - surface trim with door for 26"w x 64"h box
HCM64TF - flush trim for 26"w x 64"h box
HCM64TFD- flush trim with door for 26"w x 64"h box
