I stumbled on one the other day and saw electrical advice being giving out to Do it yourselfers. I replied, and hinted that maybe it wasnt the best thing to be giving out electrical advice to amateurs, and they jumped all over me! Isn't there some kind of law or something that prohibits giving electrical advice to these people?

No, there is no law.
If that be the case, then mike holts site would be shut down. along with others. I do not believe one can police 'advice' nor would i want the government to do that. Most adults should have some idea what they r competent to do or not.

I would certainly not want to restrict any type of DIY advice as I'm an avid DIYer myself. Generally speaking many tradesmen are DIY's, so I find it pretty laughable when they get offended when non-electricians do "our" work.

I agree I get more upset at low quality professionals, or people that take pay than I do the DIY.... Many DIY people dont claim to be the expert and just want to do it themselves for many reasons.

I am not a framer but I know enough that I built a deck 10 feet off the ground. It is safe, but if not done correctly or safely it could hurt or kill just like our professions.

On the same front I do find it amusing to read non professional posts. I rarely reply.

I always say the same thing. Wonder if there's a carpenters forum and they are all screaming because some electrician thinks that it's alright to frame his own room addition or some plumbers fourm all up in arms because we replace our own faucets and are taking food out of their kids mouth.

Remember this country was built by DIYer's. Aside from non-dwellings, being a DIYer should be a proud tradition.

Too bad there are so many ignorant people giving advice.

I will agree to both of those.

Perspective can be a funny thing. I was looking up some information on power washing equipment (I wanted a 24' wand) one day and ran across a forum for people in the trade. These guys were indignant that "non-professional" power washing people were using power washers and selling their services.

In one thread, they were trying to be careful not to reveal ultra-super trade secrets like, and I'm not kidding, how to push dirt off pavement with water.

I personally dont care if people do their own electrical work. It all seems to come full circle in the end. Many times the work is so bad it eventually needs to be repaired or becomes very inconveient to the HO's. Thats when we step in and tell them "Its not going to be cheap" .Unless a dirty station wagon EC or lowballer does it for far less than what it should be. Which seems to be the case lately. Maybe prompted by own lousy economy.

I took a look at a DIY forum a couple of weeks ago and one member told another member he could go ahead and cut the POCO's wires off at the mast and that he didn't need to wear gloves to hook it back up if he was not on an aluminum ladder.Yikes!!! We may be a bit argumentative and rude at times on this forum but I have never seen truelly stupid advice such as that offfered here.

I doubt if anyone ever was killed or thier house burned down because of an unqualified faucet installation.
