The requirement for gas pipe bonding is located in 250.104(B).

This section permits the equipment grounding conductor of the circuit likely to energized the gas pipe to be used to bond the gas pipe.

bonding of gas pipe

check out local building code changes. some states require bonding of track gas pipe systems beyond the circuit grounding conductor. it is not the nec but product requirements.

Does the NEC require metal gas pipe in a single family residence to be bonded tha same as metal water pipe?

Reply from raider1 (The requirement for gas pipe bonding is located in 250.104(B).)

I've been retired for ten years and my last code book is for 1996. In the '96 code the article is in 250-80 and I'm sure the wording is about the same for bonding the water piping and any other metal piping that could become energized. The reason that I asked the question is because a friend that is still working at the trade changed out a residential service and bonded the water piping. The electrical inspector told him that was wrong and to remove the bond from the metal water pipe and move it to the metal gas pipe. I told my friend that the inspector was absolutely wrong. My original question was not worded too well. Thank you, Daniel J. Patterson (djpseco)

I agree with you, the inspector is wrong in requiring the electrician to remove the bond from the water pipe and just place it on the gas pipe. Both pipes must be bonded.

Its required to be bonded.

It normally can be bonded via the EGC of whatever devices it is feeding (water heater, furnace, etc).

There were some threads here not long ago about bonding corrugated gas tubing where the manufacturer required additional bonding.
