Hello,
I've looked through several vendors, and it looks like Diesel Locomotive Cable(DLO) only comes with CPE type jacket and EPR insulation. Is this standard for this type of cable? Does anyone have info on other type jacket material being offered as an alternative?
Thank you,
EE

Do you want "DLO" specifically or do you want fine-strand copper cable? What's the application? DLO isn't an NEC-recognized cable type but a lot of it is dual-labeled as RHH/RHW.

If you don't need over 600 volt rating, look at type W and single-conductor S types (SOW/etc).

Hi, yes, I'm looking specifically at DLO type cable.
Thanks,

AFAICT, all modern "DLO" cable uses CPE and EPR insulation (and that's probably fine for a locomotive). What's the application and why DLO specifically? Is this an NEC-covered application or not?

You could call the cable manufacturers and ask them, too.

And to be clear, CPE or EPR is the insulation material, not the use rating of the cable. DLO is the use rating, as would be an RHH/RHW rating.

So what zbang is telling you is that if you want to use this cable in compliance with the NEC, DLO is not a valid cable rating by itself, so it cannot be used. But RHH/RHW is, which is why many of the DLO suppliers list it with dual ratings. So unless you plan to use it FOR wiring up a something that does not need NEC compliance, such as a diesel locomotive, the DLO rating by itself is somewhat useless.

If that is the case (meaning non-NEC use), the CPE is probably the best insulation material out there, slightly better than EPR (which itself is very good). So what “other” material would you be wanting and why?

What's the application? I think DLO by its nature only comes with a thermoset rubber jacket. There are other similar cable types with thermoplastic and/or synthetic rubber jackets.

Edit: Philatron makes it with their polyolefin based synthetic rubber compound. I have had other cable with that jacket -its tough!. And also not cheap.

Edit again, that philatron cable doesnt seem to be RHW. They make all sorts of wierd stuff though so they might have a RHW cable with their jacket compound.
