Do fan coil units ( FCU ) typically need separate motor starters?

Do fan coil units (FCU) typically need a separate (non-integral) motor starter? Or - does one typically run power direct from a breaker, and the FCU includes its own motor starter (if required)?

Typically most of the FCUs I have worked on are fed from the breaker to a fused switch/SSU to the unit. Most units have a motor with an internal thermal unit for overload conditions.

Thank you both for the input! It's not yet clear if the FCU being provided has a starter, but appears that they usually are integral from what you've both said.
