Do LED lights degrade over time

Does the lumen output of an LED bulb degrade over time. It appears that bulbs that were installed 2 years ago do not have the light output that I remember when installed. Since these are in corridors and stairway, my concern is adequate light levels for code compliance. Will obtain light meter to check, but wondered about bulbs getting "dimmer" over time.

Yes, in particular high temperatures cause LEDs to decay, and one way that manufacturers save money is to use fewer LEDs, driven harder to produce a given light output. This makes the LEDs hotter and causes them to decay faster.

There are other degradation mechanisms; these are seen with many phosphor based lights (LED, fluorescent, etc)

If they all really lasted 10 years we and the manufacturer would be out of the job pretty quick. Have seen a lot of LED failures, all different makes and styles.

As determined under the LM-80 standard, Manufactures are not required to list LED Lumen Maintenance on the nameplate.

Yes they have a useful Life of only 50,000 hours. keep your receipt. I have a couple floods bought 10 yrs ago with same output.

About seven years ago I bought some low watt bulbs (upper end of night light brightness) and some floods from the same manufacturer at Costco.
After about three months of constant use the small bulbs were getting seriously dimmer. Costco ended up recalling both types.

yeah, they burn down, not out.

some luminaries are able to compensate for this.
the fixture is underdriven to start, and as it ages,
there is capacity for it to increase power to the led's
to maintain the same light output over its rated life.

don't expect this on any lower end LED luminare.

this also means, if you think about it, that the device
becomes less efficient over time. sort of like a prius.
as the batteries lose their spunk, the engine runs more
and more in the course of operation.

Yeah, structural design process, power adapter and lamp mismatch, bad heat dissipation ,heat dissipation of lamps and lanterns themselves, transmittance of glass or covers and so on, all these factors will influence the lumen output of an LED bulb.
