There are limitations to direct burial with emt

NEC 2008 said:
358.10 Uses Permitted.
(A) Exposed and Concealed. The use of EMT shall be permitted for both exposed and concealed work.
(B) Corrosion Protection. Ferrous or nonferrous EMT, elbows, couplings, and fittings shall be permitted to be installed in concrete, in direct contact with the earth, or in areas subject to severe corrosive influences where protected by corrosion protection and judged suitable for the condition.

The code says you can bury it.

However the UL White Book says that additional corrosion protection is almost always required for buried EMT or EMT installed in below grade slabs.

I had an inspector turn my EMT down. He thought we were on grade because he could look out the window and the grass. He didnt realize he parked under the building in a parking garage.
