Dock wireing

a fellow inspecor ask me to post this question. Are the controls for the motors on a boat lift allowed in the same box with all the dock wireing? 12"x12" pvc Jbox with latching cover. Wires to motors, lights, recticals etc. Wirenuts were taped on to keep them on for safty. I told him there was no code violation that I know of. Any thoughts on this????
 
I don't know . I'll ask tomorrow. Would it make a differance? His main conplaint is the wireing in the same box with the controls for safty should wirenut fall off.
 
I assume you are talking about the 24-volt limit switch wiring. It's put in the same conduit around here all the time. Inspectors don't seem to have a problem with it.

I'm not sure, but I do believe it is class 1.
 
No this is 120/240 motor wireing and gfi wireing in a Jbox with the up and down controls in the same box instead of a seperate box as most people do. We cannot find and code violation in the NEC.

If it's GFI wiring and 120/240-volt motor wiring, I can't see any violation. The only violation would be if you had class 2 or 3 wires in with the higher voltage wiring.
 
I asked a question in another thread regarding dock wiring methods. My question was concerning running a cable under a dock, addressed in Art. 555.13. This Article sends me to Art. 400.4 (flexible cords & cables).
555.13 requires the cable to meet specs that are not listed in Art. 400.4. Only hard usage/wet/damp ect. How can I find a cable that meets all the requirements of 555.13? Or is hard usage the key word? (use sow)?
Note: This is fresh water not salt water.

The code refers to extra-hard usage portable power cable. It also specifically mentions type W, G, G-GC, and PPO. I would run the SOW by the local AHJ. Looking at the rating for SOW, I don't see it as a problem since it is rated extra-hard usage. The problem I do see, is that it does not appear to come in a large enough conductor size. Why not just use W or G or PPO that are specifically listed in 555? Make sure you get a cable that has sunlight and wet ratings imprinted on the jacket.

Thanks for the input. I am not familiar with W/G or PPO cables. SOW only has wet and oil rated on jacket. That is why I am confused. Can you point me to the cables you mentioned.....Thanks

Just ask your supply house to get you a spec sheet and quote. A couple for things to be aware of. You will probably need to use a pin connector on the cable when you attach it to a breaker or neutral/ground bar. The stranding is so fine, it may be damaged by the screw.

Not all W is created equal. I had some that was tinned and seemed smaller than others. I would not use any more, and the rep for that manufacturer contacted me about why. He tested some of theirs and some of the others, and (wow) they had slightly less copper in theirs.
