Does about 30 coats of paint = explosionproof?

Snapped this pic this morning where I buy gas. Tough to see in the pic but this old recep and intercom speaker have been repeatedly painted over. Raceway is EMT with a set screw connector.

No; with 15 or more coats it probably meets a Section 500.7(J) Protection Technique. Just kidding.

What makes you think it would need to be explosionproof? See Figure 514.3; it appears to be out of the classified location. Section 514.7 is also relevant, but it looks OK.

Combining power and presumably Class 2 intercom in same conduit may be more of an issue. OK now if intercom is abandoned?

Zooming in on the setup, it appears there's no direct raceway connection between the receptacle and speaker.

I agree, it's not a classified location, as it appears to be outdoors

Well, it just shows that painters are the same everywhere. I don't know how many times I have gone out to survey an installation only to find every nameplate, vent and gauge painted.
