I have a resi job that's about 40% full rehab and 60% historical clean up. In the new and rehab areas gets new NM-B and comes up to 2008 NEC, i.e. tamper resistant. The problem is (in the historical area) I would like to replace the old 2 prong 2 wire with new 2 prong 2 wire TAMPER RESISTANT (grounding is not possible, GFCI breakers could be a problem, and GFCI duplex will not look right) Does anyone make 2 prong 2 wire ungrounded TAMPER RESISTANT duplex receptacles ?

No but as I understand it the 2011 code will have an exception that a 2 wire receptacle replacement does not have to be TR. except #4

Here is the 2011 draft

406.12 Tamper-Resistant Receptacles for Dwelling Units.

In all areas specified in 210.52, all nonlocking type 125-volt, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles shall be listed
tamper-resistant receptacles. [ROP 18-62, 18-68]

Exception No. 1: Receptacles located more than 1.7 m (512 ft) above the floor. [ROP 18-71]

Exception No. 2: Receptacles that are part of a luminaire or appliance. [ROP 18-71]

Exception No. 3: A single receptacle or a duplex receptacle for two appliances located within dedicated space for each appliance that in normal use is not easily moved from

one place to another and that is cord-and-plug connected in accordance with 400.7(A)(6), (A)(7), or (A)(8).

[ROP 18-71]

Exception No. 4: Nongrounding receptacles used for replacements as permitted in 406.4(D)(2)(a). [ROP 18-82]

In this case the AHJ is not requiring TR's in the area in question (original living room & parlor). It's just that I'm using TR's everywhere else yet the most likely place rugrats crawl will get nothing. Are there any listed TR plates ?

Unfortunately, around here in a 1915 K&T house "downstream" can be quite an elusive term. Lighting outlets often grab "whites" (more properly "grounded conductors") from anywhere handy. You pretty much have to GFCI receps. one at a time. The "look" would be the problem, cost is not a big issue.

Thanks
