Does anyone remember the gfci thread??

You really are a glutton for punishment aren't you. :D

A word of advice, lighten up, your embarrassment or what ever keeps you stuck on this is not getting you anywhere.

You were shown how GFCI's work in multiple threads and should be able to understand it, but regardless, don't expect us to just let you ramble on with out having some fun along the way, laugh with us or be miserable, it's your choice.

Roger

I am not looking for it to get me anywhere. Where do you think this could get me?? I am far from miserable I have 3 large bank checks in my wallet, I just sold a house. I genuinely do this so that others may think independantly without grand standers steering thier opinions without actually testing thier book theory. The fact that you try to ridicule me is enough for inteligent individuals to suspect fraud.

quogueelectric:

Do a resistance check from the ground terminal to the input hot terminal. If you get a reading between 10,000 ohms or lower and 1 megohm, then the EGC might be required. If higher it does not prove that the EGC is not required.

After you do do your electrical tests, then disassemble the unit and see if there is any physical connection of the EGC bus inside the device to anything other than the ground pins.

Why not do that first. Why bother with the test?

Dennis:

I know the general opinion is that the ground terminal is not required to be connected to anything for the GFCI to function. That also is my opinion. But I do not know that to be true for the older units that quogueelectric has. I respect his description of the shock he once received. I do not know the origin of or have an explanation for his shock. Thus, it is logic to evaluate a unit of the same model and time frame as the one he used when he received his shock.

If I really do not know what is inside a device and I can make some intelligent measurements on the device, then those measurements are where I start.

I would probably start by determining what its logical operation is, its input current, maybe waveform, and anything else of interest. Only after I knew as much about the device as possible from the outside would I open it up. After opening it the possibility of reassembling into its original condition may not exist.

If you have a large supply of the devices, then the order of doing the evaluation may not make much difference.

I have no doubt he received a shock. If while grounded I contact a live conductor supplied by a working GFCI I will also receive a full line voltage shock of some duration. If I happen to end up line to line on a GFCI protected circuit I will receive a full line voltage shock of unlimited duration.

Pm me an address if you would like me to send you one.

you guys get rather heated over this topic  i have not been in the electrical field very long but i know if i hook up a gfci without a ground - as sometimes i have to do in an older bathroom they seem to work fine
