Doing more than electrical work

I had a Lead Electrician refuse to go to a job pulling/installing HVAC Controls wiring. "....it's not electrical work." he said.

That guy must have been nuts. The company I work for , that's all we do and I love it. That guy was probably just scared that he wouldn't understand it or be able to pick it up and look dumb.

At my old employer, electricians work in three groups and transfered back/forth for different reasons. This is a large factory enviroment.

Maintainence- service/maintain machinery in production

FAB- moving/installing new machinery/service and office/building electical

Systems- maintained/installed computer systems or just what this thread is about.

They had other people that actually worked on problems within the PC's themselves.

I worked for a firm that had a major contract changing ballast and lamps, I HATED IT. Week after week changing lamps and ballast...But I had to do it at scale when I knew many that do this are making minimum wage as a building porter or maintenance man. I sure was not going to suggest he cut my pay.

For what it's worth, I think people who are of this belief that it even mattters are anal retentive. There is no logical reason for grounds to be up or down. Just keep them consistent. Although in commercial is usually the only place I've seen them up and residential they are always down. So basically it's the commercial guys that think that up is better. But they also think that houses should all be wired in #12.

We were taught that doing commercial work too. Always wondered why....I don't see how it would matter either as long as they were all the same. Some people are even so anal that all plate screws must line up the same way.

Look stick.. You should think of this as "I"m super electrician" I can do electrical and this for the company. What if they give you a shovel and have you dig all the time. That happens to. Would you be happy because your digging to put in electrical conduits? I'd rather be networking. You should look at it as your the elite electrician that can do anything for this company.

What the heck is a master electrician? I have a license to work in my state, thats all I need.

In Virginia you have to have 8000 hrs time then pass the test to get a Journeyman's Card, then 2000 Hrs more and test again for a Master's Card. Only then can you go for your contractor's license.

In NC you need 8000 Hrs time and pass the test and your in business.

I'm about the money, thats about it. All I read on this forum is how much contractors should be charging, so now its my time to ask how much I should be charging my boss...
You should go out on your own for a while. It might make you a little humble again. What you should be charging your boss....? that doesnt sound very logical to me....

I can top that. In Rhode Island, you need the same 8000 hours of work experience, but also need 576 hours of class time, which means that you're attending night school for three hours a night, twice weekly, from September to April, for four years.

Then, and only then, are you eligible to take the journeyman's test.

After that, we have to complete 4000 more hours before being eligible for the Master exam.
