I replaced some older CH AFCI when they failed to trip with the test button. Trip coils were shot. New are Dual function AFCI/GFCI
Standing next my panel & thought maybe it's time to test the new ones. The first one I pressed was impressive. Sparks and loud POP. I'm not pressing another test button. It reset so I at least have OC protection. I think.

Well I'll be... Wholesaler said they would swap it out as defective.
Recommended order of operations:

* xFCI manufacture technical support should provide you a documented case number, and may prohibit replacement before certain conditions are ruled out.

* OEM has the right to prevent destroying more devices, or keep last one in place, until durable SPD is approved & installed, per NEC 230.67

Some locations with severe utility excursions burn thru most brands of SPD.

* Regardless if utility excursions exist, AHJ may use OEM support records for a code variance, per 210.12(A) exception with existing fire alarms.

* Such AHJ variance with no evidence of surge events, will also be cause for state level amendments, with lobbying assistance from your local Chamber of Commerce.
