I am wondering were y'all install your chime transformers? We put them in the attic for years. The manufacture specs tell us not to do to heat. We are now locating them in a closet up high. We are getting a lot of calls on this from the builders, not the home owners. I believe they are creating a problem before there is a problem. They get use to seeing it in the attic and all h... brakes out when we change something. So what do y'all do with your transformers?

Us guys, (northern for ya'll), we have basements so they are in a number of places, through 1/2" KO at the panel, through the KO of the basement pullchain light, even some are installed in an accessable junction box. You might try in the garage if there is one. IMHO

Down yonder in NC we usually put them in the crawl space by the access door. I have put them in attics before I learned of my evil ways. Honestly, I have some that have going for 20 years in the attic-- go figure. Haven't ever replaced one there but I avoided it when I can

When dealing with a house that has no basment, and all the rooms have finished walls, your options can be limited.

So, we might put them in a utility room, up high, and out of the way. Or in a closet, above the door where no one really looks

Usually mounted on a blank plate, with the class 2 terminals exposed on the outside.

I used to put them up high in the laundry room, garage, above a water heater, or some utility room like Kbsparky.

I have always had my own reservations about putting them in clothes closets due to some very hot ones I have encountered.

In an unfinished basement we mount them with the basement smoke using the ko on top of a metal octagon bracket box. In a finished basement we install them the same way but in the utility room. It?s Easy access and out of the way.

On a multi-unit condo job we just finished...ALL the walls were finished ~ no access anywhere to anything.
Transformers went in the closest...inspector did not "like" that....BUT, the GC was willing pay to the extra for this:

Typical t-stat lock box.
The transformers were mounted to a blank plate with 1/2" ko .

The other alternative was relocating to mech room (each unit had a small one)...including the associated wiring in finished walls .

EI was happy, GC paid...everyone wins.

Neat Transformer Here

Yeah, I think they're pretty new, and they're a good problem solver.

When I wire units that don't have a real good place (such as condo's), I generally put them in the knockout on the end of the closest fluorescent strip light to the chime, in a closet. My usual custom is to put a strip on the inside of each closet, right above the door trim. There's often an entry coat closet, so on the end of that fixture is where I park the xfmr. You'll never see it, unless you step inside the closet and purposely look up there.

That does indeed look like they have eliminated a multitude of sins with one of those. Simply hang your chime unit right over the transformer, covering the whole she-bang. I'll have to consider using that method on the next doorbell installation we do.

It's funny to see all the regional differences. Around here, the first place to look for (or to install) the transformer would be right on the side of the panel board in the basement.

In the fully finished condo's, etc, they are usually in the utility room by the furnace. In any event, they always seem to be close by the panel.

Agreed, adjacent to the panel or in the utility room. Think about the guy who will have to find it 10 years from now when the transformer burns out.
