I have a 240 appliance that requires a 2 pole breaker. Is it a violation if I use 2 single pole breakers and link the 2 handles together with cloths hanger wire so it can break both sides of the circuit? I have seen this done before and I was wondering because I am cheap. :p

Re: Double Pole Breaker

I don't think you can use a coat hanger. Around here, the AHJ likes to see bare #12 AWG solid copper.
:D

Re: Double Pole Breaker

Sorry but 240.20(B) requires a circuit breaker to open all ungrounded conductors of the circuit both manually and automatically unless otherwise permitted in 240.20(B)(1), (B)(2), and (B)(3). This was changed by panel 10 in the 2005 cycle to require a common trip mechanism. If the 2005 Code has not been adopted in your area, you may still use single pole circuit breakers with approved handle ties. :D

Re: Double Pole Breaker

Too bad my town(Weelersburg Ohio)I live doesn't even require inspections or permits and the city close to me that is approximately. 7 miles (Portsmouth Ohio) does require permits and inspections so I think that is dangerous and dumb so it seems like for some people in my town that they think the NEC rules do not apply.

Re: Double Pole Breaker

Should have been in there from jump street. This way both ungrounded conductor phases break togheter.Handle ties can come off and if there was a fault there still can be line voltage at the unit being supplied.

Re: Double Pole Breaker

240.20(B)(2) and (B)(3) in the 2005 NEC still permits single pole breakers to supply line to line loads provided an identified handle tie is used. The only change to these sections is the word approved is changed to identified.
