I say no way any lv aplications should be a min of 18 awg in my opinion. Tel wire is for comm only.

Wiring the Digita?-1 Switch

1. From the tap wire coming from the Digita? Switch
BUS, wire nut the Green, Brown and Orange conductor
of the CAT5 wire to the Green lead wire of
the switch.

2. Wire nut the Green/White, Brown/White and Orange/
White conductor of the CAT5 wire to the
Green/White lead wire of the switch.

3. Wire nut the Blue conductor of the CAT5 wire to
the Blue lead wire of the switch.

4. Wire nut the Blue/White conductor of the CAT5 wire
to the Blue/White lead wire of the switch.

This is no longer true. I understand that this was true, until recently. The new technologies are really great. You can get power and video to cameras 700 feet passively and 3000 feet with an active transceiver. Check my post above

Hey if you can find a listed device that specifically instructs you to do so go for it. Unless this is the case you shouldnt be making up your own rules. Many devices will spec what wire is required to wire it properly this is not an invitation to make it up as you go along because you dont want to buy a roll of bell wire.

YES!!!!! Here is an awsome product line Streamlines data and CCTV hubs/IDF's love it but you pay for it.

NVT (network video technoligies) they use one pair for each leg of power in their

NV-216A-PV
Power-Video Transceiver

Check it out!!!http://www.nvt.com/content.php?type=product&key=216a&cid=root

You've discovered the balun - unbalanced to balanced signal converter, with a unit at the other end to convert back. Somebody around here posted a wealth of information about stuff like this - search for posts by hbiss, and I think it was e57 that posted a PDF training document on LV stuff that might have covered baluns.

Tom - what is the application where you want to double up the conductors? I'm assuming you want to use the Cat 5 for some other LV application, not ethernet communication? There are a lot of baluns out there for video applications like nhfire77 posted, and companies are selling "USB extenders", KVM extenders for server rooms, and a lot of other things that apply the same principal of converting the signal to a balanced signal and transmitting on Cat 5 because it's plentiful, cheap, and has high noise immunity due to the nice twisted pairs.

Power over ethernet devices [mostly cameras and networking parts] are quite common.
The decision to use 18-2 [or larger] is based on current requirements and wiring length.
If you feel the need to twist pairs together for increased current carrying, then you should probably run a separate power wire. 2x 24ga wires isn't the same thing as an 18-2.
