I have a 40HP 124 VDC motor located 160 meters from the source, the size of the wire to compensate for the voltage drop is much to large to terminate in the motor termination box, is it ok to terminate the wire in the disconnect and and than run proerly sized wire to the motor, or does down sizing at the termination of the motor ruin the whole ciruit buy using smaller wire again.

After the voltage drop has been taken care of you can reduce the wire back down.
