ADALET #XJTH N4 2" junction box. Does the Code allow this enclosure to be drilled and tapped to accept 2" pipe and 2" conduit?

The enclosure is planned to be used as a junction box for the wiring connections for a Chromolux OCE (open element heater) that is inserted into a pipe. THe 2" pipe (one end threaded and the other end closed) is welded into a tank. The controls are PLC based temperature and low level controls which open/close a contactor to provide power to the heater, the heater is meant to provide freeze protection.

The design engineer defines the location as a Class 1 Div 1 hazardous location due to a vent fitting on top of the tank.

I would say no. If this is a listed explosion proof enclosure the factory threaded hubs would have to be utilized. I wouldn't feel very comfortable with a field modification in that type of hazard classification.

Also, you might want to look at 500.8(E)

Contact Adalet and ask to speak to one of their engineers. They are generally very helpful. Many of their enclosures can be field modified and they include the instructions with the enclosure.
