we do it all the time with transfomers but, i was told that according to the 2011 nec you can not drill and tap any load bearing steel. my question is what section of the code will tell me that?

I could be wrong but I don't think that you'll find that in the NEC. Who saying that it's in there?

Welcome to the Forum. :D

I had class this night and as it turns out it wasn't in the NEC, it was a trick question he gave to to us to see how well we would research the answer. He was impressed that i knew about the forum and used it as a tool. Just wanted to say thanks to all the people who responded. This a great website and a great tool for learning:D

Since there seems to be a propagation of the many myths that we have in this industry it's always best to ask someone for a reference when they provide information. Often when in CEU classes we will hear the instructor say something that doesn't seem correct so someone (usually me) will ask for a code reference. One should always ask for a reference when in doubt. I find the worst offenders to be guys on the job.
