I need to put two 7/8" holes through brick and then the foundation (Unsure if it's poured or block). I was thinking about getting a 7/8" x 18" bit but was then concerned about the capabilities of this Hilti. I've only used it a couple of times and I'm impressed with it but that was with smaller bits. Should I be worried about this? Any tips for me?

ive done some large, deep holes with my harborfreight SDS -im sure a hilti would be fine. As the other poster said, use a good bit.

Only thing to remember is with any brand drill you will have a "blow out" on the back side when the bit comes through. You will need to decide where you want the blow out to be. If you are setting a j-box that is where I would want the bad spot to be. Unless you pilot the hole with a small bit and drill half from one side and then start in from the other side to complete the hole.

Ceb 58 hit it on the head. Blow out is gonna happen. I usually drill from the side that is gonna get the most visual traffic and that way, the blowout hardly ever (if ever) gets seen.

Also, the bit does need to be good as everyone is saying. Don't throw a Vermont American in there and expect good results. As far as the drill goes, Hilti is one of the best brands for this type of drilling; along with Bosch, Metabo, etc..

Good Luck!!;)

Either way, on brick it's likely to blow out. If there is no rebar in the wall you could use a dry core drill bit.

Thanks guys for the help. Now, should I center my hole in the brick itself or a mortar seam?

For doing a 7/8'' hole I would center on the brick. With a bit that large when you start in the bit will grab the bricks edge if you start in a mortar joint. Not good for the wrist.

Stay centered in the brick to recuce the possibility of damage.

I would not attempt drilling from the inside out. Seems like you could blow the hell out of the decorative brick.

Also, be aware of possible rebar in the foundation wall.

!/4" pilot hole is a good idea.

Go thru the middle of the brick....get a quality bit, I would use a 1" instead of 7/8", since the bit will drift/bend slightly
