I looked up what the Metal building horizontal S type wall supports are called, wall Girts.. My question is are we allowed to drill and modify these wall supports. The job I am looking at will have flat siding on one side and flat wall board on the finish inside. I would have to drill the girts for EMT as well as some MC.

Chances are this is a pre-engineered steel building, if you contact the company who sold/designed it they will either already have some guidance on this or they should be able to provide it. I would pull that thread before I start drilling in structural members.

Has anyone worked with this before, is there another way, if wooden 2x4s were laid flat on the wallboard side, would it be ok to snake the MC down past the girts?

Building is 30/40 years old, not sure if i can get the information.

In that case my second plan would be to find guidance from an existing building manufacturer with girts constructed in a similar manner.

But if you don't compromise their structural integrity then you can avoid looking for that info. The 2x4s on the inside wall sounds fine, as long as the MC is OK NEC-wise in that space between girt and board. Not sure off the top of my head if screw/nail penetration is an issue, don't work much with MC.

My guess is what you are describing is not a structural support member.

I could see it still having wind rating or even snow load rating in areas that see snow if it is holding up roofing panels.

Yes, that was also a concern of mine if the mc were fished on the 1 1/4 2x4 space, not set in far enough

Pretty much anyone doing steel buildings is still in business. The manufacturer, that is, not the firm than necessarily put it up. There's usually an identification plate mounted on one of the main support elements that says who did the design.
