Lets discuss drip pans and sprinkler pipes, please.
I have two concerns.
110.26(F)(1)(c) states:
(c) Sprinkler Protection. Sprinkler protection shall be permitted for the dedicated space where the piping complies with this section.

Other piping discussed in that section requires drip pans. Does the second part of (c), where the piping complies with this section, mean that the sprinkler piping must also have drip pans ? Would a pan under a sprinkler head not deflect heat and delay operation ?

Secondly, in my particular application I have piping (various) over a 12kv/480 unit substation (transformers/breakers/monitoring etc all in one cabinet). Since a portion of this is > 600v I checked 110.34(F) which addresses foreign piping.
The following wording appears:
............Protection shall be provided where necessary to avoid damage from condensation leaks and breaks in such foreign systems. Piping and other facilities shall not be considered foreign if provided for fire protection of the electrical installation.

so, in that section, it appears the sprinkler piping is not " foreign" and requires no protection.
I am confused in that one Code section applicable to my install seems to indicate drip pans under my sprinkler pipes whereas another does not.

Input appreciated.

The first part of your question is a product of what appears at first glance an contradicting code section. The sprinkler protection is permitted for the dedicated space means that the head is not installed in the dedicated space, per our code and the head above the dedicated space would offer no protection because per NFPA 70 it would require leek protection and therefore the head would be considered obstructed per NFPA 13 rendering the head useless for fire protection purposes. So what does that leave - the head would have to be installed in the room in a location not in or above the panel and it is allowed to spray water to fight a fire on the the entire panel as well as in the area above and below, therefore, providing sprinkler protection for the dedicated space...........Notice that the section states FOR not IN....

The second part.....maybe its not water...... ;)

Input from others outside of the Forum seems to follow the same pattern.
The sprinkler head may be located to provide protection, but pans are still needed under the lines.

I concur with your what you have found from outside this forum. The sprinkler head should not be over the dedicated space but may and sometimes is required to cover the dedicated space. Any piping for the sprinkler system passing through the dedicated space would require a pan. At least this is how I have enforced it.
