You gotta love the commentary. "Dang, I left my car keys in the crane..."
Hopefully, that concrete pour is thicker near the bottom than it is shown near the top.

Right here.
Just down the street from that accident, the same developer (Emaar Properties) is beginning to build the world's tallest skyscraper. It's called the Burg Dubai. Most awesome promotional website I've seen in a long time. Check out the video on the gallery page. http://www.burjdubai.com/

We need a "Coffee House" or "General Chat" forum.

A "Tips" forum would be nice as well.

I have a board of my own I run (check my profile for the URL) y'all are free to hang out on to discuss assorted irrelevant, off-topic and otherwise meaningless stuff.

Here's some text from that website; ahem:

It is not by chance that it is being built in Dubai. In less than thirty years, this city has transformed itself from a regional center to a global one. This success WAS NOT BASED ON OIL RESERVES, but on reserves of human talent, ingenuity and initiative.

A vision this bold requires visionaries. Creating the centerpiece for a NEW WORLD CAPITAL attracted the world's most esteemed designers. . . .

okay that's all i could type before throwing up. I just put a lot of money into a biofuel producing facility; it'd better damn well work.

Oh yaas, biofuels work, just not economically or environmentally. But, given the level of subsidies your Govt is pouring into biofuels at the mo, someone is going to make a large wad out of it. Are biofuels the new dot com...?

Actually, if you take a look at what is occuring in Dubai there is truth to that marketing speal. The plan of the government is to transform Dubai into a resort/vacation destination before the oil reserves are depleted. There are several large projects that have been completed or are taking place that is part of that transformation;

There are two other facilities like the snowdome, one in Spain and another at a new mall near the Meadowlands, NJ

Last I heard Palm Island is close to sold out.

Back to the OP, I think this is value engineering at it's finest.

Ski Dubai

I'm sure that's going to be great for all the wealthy people on the Arabian peninsula, but not so hot for the majority of people in that part of the planet who live in poverty.

I'm also curious where they think they are going to get the energy for these projects in the long term. There's plenty of sun throughout the middle east, but I'm not seeing massive renewable energy projects being developed.

yes it is impressive and has been ongoing for some time now,
yet, i don't like to think of the impact on the environment... i'm sure not much attention has been paid to that. after all, we don't even get it right here.

do they ever have severe storms in the arabian sea or gulf - I mean that thing looks a few meters from the water level at most and also totaly man made

I remember the airport in japan that was made on a manmade island and it was sinking more every year

That's not a large body of water, like the Gulf of Mexico and I'm not aware of any tropical storms, if that's the question.

I'd be more concerned about the sinking aspects, though I believe the water there is shallower than the Japanese airport you mentioned.

There was an article in the news, and I forget exactly where I read it (could have been here, even!) that there is a sand shortage (?!?) in the area because of Dubai's construction work.
