Does anyone happen to know. May a duct smoke shut down an air handling unit via a BMS system or must it be a hard wired connection to it's starter circuit?

Mike

We usually break the units control circuit directly via the duct smoke or through a fire alarm system control mod.

If the air handlers are part of smoke evac / pressurization the building control system will also be tied into the fire alarm but regardless of the BMS commands smoke at any particular unit will shut it down.

Now all that said, I am sorry but I do not know what the code actually requires here.

We have used the BMS system's to control fan shutdowns in the past. It seems to be the prevalent type of installation in large buildings.

I have insisted that the fire alarm system directly shut down the fans via a method not reliant to software other than the fire alarm system directly.
Most BMS are not listed as fire alarm control, so it cannot be used for code required fan shutdown.

I remember reading in the Conservation Construction Code of NYS that the control can be from a BMS if it is present in the building, but that control cannot interfere with the firealarm controls.
