Duel Business ?

I have a small electrical company. My friend works in HVAC , he is checking in to getting his class A license. We are talking about him coming to work for me and my company doing both elctrical and a/c. I'm just gathering info right now. I know other companies offer both. Has anyone had good or bad experiences trying this? Is it legal? Do I have to make him a partner? Thanks for any input.

I think this is more of a question for your lawyer, banker and, if you have one, business consultant.

Legal?, yes. Good idea?, that's up to you two.

Be aware that your friendship will probably end.

Just kidding. ;)

In Florida he will have to have 10% ownership in the company and be finacially responcible.

I try to ignore the occasional misspelled word or the word incorrectly applied. But sometimes the error leaves us with something that is funny, or something that is accidentally meaningful in some way.

Clearly, the title of this thread was intended to convey ?dual business,? with ?dual? meaning two. What we see instead is ?duel,? which tells me the two of you will someday fight a duel to the death (of the company). A ?Freudian Slip,? perhaps? ;)

The only "ship" that is guaranteed to sink is a "partnership". There was a lengthy thread recently on the pros and cons of partnerships. My advice is, if you wish to remain friends, each of you run your own company and cooperate with each other, but keep things separate.
Some partnerships work, but they appear to be the exception rather than the rule.

As with any business, depending on the management will determine the prosperity of the venture. I do know that homeowners like to call 1 person for all things gone wrong. I have worked for a multi-discipline shop before and I think it worked well, keeping in mind every trade had it's own management hierarchy. I have also been in a partnership and am not to date, read between the lines!

My feelings also, they can agree to support each other in building their business.

It's funny that you chose the word DUEL.

Definition:

"A prearranged combat between two persons, fought with deadly weapons according to an accepted code of procedure, esp. to settle a private quarrel."

It seems you answered your own question.
