Duke Energy now requires a 20' 6x6 pole 4' deep in the ground for any overhead saw pole service that is more than 10' from the pole. Not only are these pole incredibly heavy they cost over $100 and are not easy to find.

They must be one piece also so you can't scab on to a 4x6 or a 4x4 and beef it up.

4' deep-- small contractors like myself would have great difficulty with these rules. The cost of a saw pole has just skyrocketed.

There is more....

Its not just this outfit that is displaying definite insanity, its roughly 99% of whats going on in the Tech and Engineering world.
Over the last 30 years take note:
Constant degradation of Engineering standards and trends due to everything being " Monetized."
A major lot of Solid State Technology that " does not work worth a damn " and people in the field keep accepting without much resistance or complaint.
An increase in unnecessary complexity and diversity of gear that does nothing but waste time in the field.
Thow away Technology that people keep paying big dollars for.
Technology mandates whose real reason and purpose is veiled, but obvious to those who can see it.
Metric terms being forced down the throats of USA Craftsmen who DO NOT WANT them.
Terrible Documentation trends that are impossible to read or make sense of.
The Attempt to convert everything into watts and do away with VERY useful terms such as Horsepower that many of us have a very good feel for.
People drawing paychecks behind high walls that are somehow insulated from the consequences of their combined actions and who could not give you a straight or useful answer if their lives depended on it. This inculdes people in ivory towers thinking they know better when they have never turned a wrench or solved any real challenges in the field whatsoever. These types live in theoretical fantasy realms that run on a lack of real accountability.
The Idea of " Climate Change " being man made which is not only a total falsehood, but based on fradulent, insanity driven science. Creating problems scenarios in industries that are affected as thus. Even worse everyone in the trades below falling into lockstep and following orders given from above " without question."
Acting like sheep, and not registering complaints when absolutely necessary. Allowing people who do not really know " whats going on " to dictate industry altering trends.
Running business based on constant growth models and other ridiculous notions. Being strictly volume driven.
This is just getting started......

Ok, I'll bite. What the heck is a saw pole and a saw pole service? :?

Do they want 20' exposed, so a 24' pole?

Either way a 4' bury depth effectively eliminates man-held augers and hand-dug holes.

Up up here I'm seeing AHJ's increasing footing depths. Has been 36" forever, now they want 42". Despite supposedly warmer climate temps for decades.

I guess they wanna be ready for the next Ice Age.....

This I'm fine with. Horsepower has far too many variations in type and measurement method.

I own shop vacs that are rated at higher horsepower than my Delta Unisaw's 3HP Baldor motor....which is nearly as large as a shop vac....;)

Yes, what is saw pole?

And as far as using KW instead of HP, Ha!

You can manipulate numbers to want you want them to be. Just like the book "How to Lie With Statistics".

So, the shop vacuum people just use the inrush current at higher than normal voltage input to claim their KW rating. What have you fixed by using the term KW instead of HP? You could use kilogram-metres per minute, but it is still a fudgeable number in the hands of the advertising people! Conversion factors available for every different way to specify ability to do work.

Nice post Starcat!
Just you left out "Get Off My Lawn"!
You are seeing the fallout of the PC movement and the old brown nose gang. The best part are the people who have no problem dishing it out yet can't take it. The U.S.A. is being feminized for further control of the populace. Just watch the tv shows and commercials, see a common thread there?

Saw pole is what Duke calls it.... It is a temp pole for a job site-- you know where the carpenters can use their saws. :D

My local utility requires a 4x6, 42" down, braced with two 14' 2x4's staked 2' down.

Dennis, does Duke send someone out to check the hole depth before you install a pole?

They do inspect it but not sure if they check the depth. There is an option -- if you can't get 4' you have to brace the pole at 90° with 2x4's
