Yesterday I got a VM from a D&B rep stating the following- " a few companies have inquired about your company, looking to do business w/ you. However, there is limited information available."

Continues.." call us to build your business credit report." So I go online and look at their score builder products which are $300-$700.

Have any of you guys used these D&B products? Is there a better (cheaper) way to do this?

Thanks Fellas

I got a call similar VM. I got a D&B # for free. You need it for bigger clients. I wouldn't pay money for a number, if your a large company it might be worth investigating more.

No... I didn't pay for a #. If your a big company you WOULDN'T need to build business credit, you'd have a mountain of it.

D&B is a scam IMO.. everybody wants to help you for a fee sooner or later. They use your mindset of wanting more business to get you to sign up.

I looked into getting a D&B #, because a credit app asked for it. I decided against it. I just don't see a real need for one at this point in time.

Maybe we're talking about two different things. It wasn't free when I was considering it. It was several hundred dollars.

Most likely it's the same thing, If I remember right it's the Duns# or Arida # that caused me to get boom barded with government spam emails about how to win government contracts yadda yadda. all are free.

Sounds like you are talking about getting a Dunns number, and he is inquiring about D&B credit services.

The D&B number is free, but like any other business, they are trying to upsell you things, that you may not need. The credit report service, I think was something like $400 a cpuple of years ago? I don't know what it is now-a-days.

And yes, you will get bombarded with junk mail for some reason.

They caught me at a weak moment and I paid the $350 or so for the credit builder. I really didn't need it but thought it sounded like a good idea.
I have had a dunns # for many years and things were just fine.

Then the problems started. They called me asking for all kinds of information, said I didn't pay for the services, etc.
I was not happy and asked them how they could be helping me in any way if they cant understand their own AR and AP.
This went on for several months. I expected my credit to be trashed by all of this. Having a problem with D&B and all.
Then, just for fun, they took another $350 out of my account the next year.

Found out that they had issued me a new D&B #. ( I had to have it deleted)
The people that sell the credit builder are a total scam and are only loosely associated with D&B.
Bottom line:
Avoid this scam and get your free D&B# by going to the D&B website.

Dunns# provided by D&B credit service is a different offering. however they talk like they are the same meaning you need to sign up for the D&B service to get a Dunns #

Never mind guys it was the CCR # that got me spammed. ccr.gov

So is there anyone on this forum who actually has a D&B # or a DUNS # and feels it was beneficial to their business??

D&B has been calling me daily, probably to pitch the same message you got.

When they first called and said who they were, I hung up. Now I just hit the ignore button on my phone as I recognize the number; its somewhere out of north carolina.

They leave messages saying the need to speak w/ me, and that its urgent.

I have had a D-U-N-S # for over 20 years. Some of my suppliers report payment history to them, so it's the same thing as a credit agency/reporting for business as Equifax and Trans-Union is for consumers.

I believe it has been useful in obtaining an open account with new vendors or suppliers. Sort of gives you credibility when looking at a report showing an established business operating for the long term with favorable payment history.

The only difference I can tell between them is the consumers are entitled to a free copy of their report once a year but businesses have to pay through the nose for theirs.
