NEC 2017 Section 620.85 says single receptacle elevator pit is not required to be GFCI.

I have sump pump elevator pit that has duplex receptacle. However not sure if duplex receptacle is considered single receptacle or not.

Is their definition of duplex receptacle in NEC 2017 which says they are two receptacles or single?

Where on 2017 NEC it states duplex is two receptacles? Anyone know
Sometimes I wonder if you even try before asking...
The NEC doesn’t define every word in the text.

look up receptacle in 100.

The word “Duplex” literally means “two fold” made of two parts. (duo in Latin).
Simplex from the Latin literally means single...

Infinty told you the answer...
Also it can’t get much clearer than electrofelons link

I get it. I am not asking for myself. Code enforcement meaning cannot make up stuff on my own someone else design. I do remember in NEC 2014 had it somewhere later Article 100.

Too bad we are not in 2020. I am in 2017 nec

But the 2017 literally says “A single receptacle is a single contact device with no other contact device on the same yoke. A multiple receptacle is two or more contact devices on the same yoke.”

two is multiple...
Duplex is multiple, or more than one...

To add to the confusion, some manufactures call a 'receptacle' an 'outlet'.
Again, slang gets in the way of general language.

The NEC does not say duplex, instead it uses the more general term 'multiple'.
Electricians may not be using current NEC terms, they tend to use the terms they hear on their job. Mmanufacturer marketing material almost never follows the NEC.

Not to be rude, but if your job is code enforcement... shouldn't your company better train you on the codes? I'm no code wizard, but I'll generally ask around my office and discuss things with people I work with before throwing questions on here. This was a simple question which Goggle could have answered for you with less trouble.
