Dutchess County, NY New License Law

Does anyone know of any meetings coming up re the new license law and or the grandfather clause. I am one of those contractors that has been in business for quite awhile. Doing just fine with my work and passing all my inspections with NYBFU. I was going to try and use them to help me support my 11 1/2 years since I have been using them for more than that. But when I asked for a letter I was told due to a computer upgrade they don't have records prior to 2002. I have gotten letters from both my accountant ( 12 years) and my Insurance Agent ( general liability 15 years). This is probably still a year off since the law just passed. I just don't want to be one of those small ( not so great test takin) companys put outta business by a license law...

What other items might be acceptable to the powers that be?

Any input by anyone else similary affected is greatly appreciated

Last I knew it had been vetoed: http://www.dutchessny.gov/CountyGov/Departments/Legislature/ResolutionsPDF/208194.pdf

Maybe it's been passed and not entered into the County's website. Sorry. I just realized the veto was overridden on October 16, 2008. The text of the legislation is available by clicking on the link I've provided.

The law was passed, and I'm in the same, presently unlicensed, boat as you are HVelectrician...been in the field for 20 yrs and self employed for 9....I can't even locate the licensed leectrical contractor that I started out with ...he moved to Arizona or someplace some years ago. I am a member of the Dutchess County Electrical Contractors Assn. and we have a meeting coming up on the 17th... If I learn anything new I will let you know. If you are not a member of the DCECA I would suggest it. You can PM me if you want some info.

Any time a license requirement is passed and takes affect, there are some who will not benefit from the change.
My advice is to collect as much data about your activities as an electrical contractor as is possible.

1. Local towns that you have filed a permit with will have the record of that permit for many years back more than 11 years.

2. You can go to the Social Security office and for $50 they will print out a copy of your entire history of work.

3. Get copies of your reciepts from supply houses or wherever you may have purchased electical supplies

4. Contact an attorney who is fimilar with construction/licensing law. They will most likely be of great help.

5. Be professional and not nasty when you are dealing with a licensing board...remember that they have heard all of the stories.

Good luck!!!
