My question to the forum is this: If I have a 1186 sq ft home fed with a single phase 100 amp service, Can I run a #6 RHW AL, feeder to my detached shop and put it on a 50 amp OCD?
Thanks.

What are the calculated loads for the home and the shop?

Chris
Lets say the home is all gas, and cacul's to 43 and 1/3 amperes. And the shop is just got general recept, a buzz box 240 volt welder, drill press, GUN lathe, aircompressor, t.v., frig (for ice tea or sumtin) coffee pot, potbelly stove (wood) I guess that's enough for now. So with that being said, we will give the shop a load of 45 amps, cause he is a retired guy with no kids to help out in the shop. Is that enough info?:-?

I'm guessing, but given the size of the house and the all gas appliances your 100 amp service should be adequate.

There is no reason you can't run a larger wire and a 100 amp breaker as long as the calculated load isn't over 100 amps. I am not sure if that is what you are after. Certainly the #6 alum. is good for 50 amps.

according to 310.16 RHW AL in the 75? C column is good up to 95amps that being said you will need to derate for conduit size, length and temperature but I'd say yes

you better look again #6 Alum. rhw

Good catch Dennis I'm trying to read on here and work at the same time had the free air (310.17) table open for work....#6 RHW is rated for 50amps.

Sorry about that I will flog myself later

:-?

I see it as 50A in that col.

[EDIT: I see Dennis questioned the above while I typed my reply]

Where does the NEC ever mention derating for conduit size?

I guess technically, I was getting at the following 230.79 (A)(B)(C) and (D)especially D.

I think you mean 225.39 ABC & D. Apparently the disco only needs to be rated 60 amp. I find this rule odd. It would appear that the wire to the garage should be rated 60 amps also. Thus I can have a 60 amp disco at the house with a 50 amp disco at the garage. Strange

yes,

yes,

:)

Yep, I stand corrected, not 230, but 225 since it is now a feeder versus a service. Thanks D.A. Your alright, I don't care what them other guys said.
