I have dwelling unit residential panelboard that feeds branch circuits. Are the branch circuits required to be run in conduit for the dwelling unit?

Not as far as the NEC is concerned.

Roger

Depends on where the branch circuits are going and what wiring method you use to get them there.

Depends on where the branch circuits are going and how they need to get there.

It’s going from panelboard inside dwelling unit hallway to the bedroom and hallway smoke detectors in dwelling unit. It’s 2 bedrooms, one dining room, one living room with one kitchen dewelling unit/apartment unit.

What makes you think it would need to be installed in conduit?

Roger

You generally match what is existing (presuming it's legal), unless a specific code change says otherwise.

And some locations have local codes which require conduit. As Roger says, not required per NEC.

A friend's apartment is in a converted mill building. The 'aesthetic' called for things like surface mounted strut as the raceway. In that situation NEC might permit NM but the customer might demand something different.

If in Chicago or suburbs, then yes, but with the above question the devil is in the details.
