I have one standalone building classified as group R converted to assisted living for 8 people. The building has attic, first floor and basement.

Basement has recreation room, bathroom, and 3 bedrooms

The first floor has 5 bedrooms, bathroom, living/dining room, kitchen. Kitchen has refrigerator, kitchen hood fan on top of stove, dishwasher

Attic is not habitable just attic has HVAC equipment.

I am wondering would the building as whole be considered dwelling unit by NEC 2014? If not then which part of the building if any would be dwelling unit? I looked at definition of NEC 2014 section 100 dwelling unit but am confused it says single unit while I have basement and first floor

A single unit does not mean one floor. It means one dwelling unit which can be as small or as large as you want it to be.

In addition to post #1 above the building first floor also has one sprinkler room and storage rooms.

So your saying basement, first floor or entire building would be dwelling unit?

The complete building is a dwelling unit.

Just trying to make sure I'm clear on where the breaking point would be to be considered a Multi-family... so I read the definitions of
one family as one "unit", two family is two, three+ is multi. Then I read Dwelling Unit: a single unit providing complete and independent living facilities for one or more persons, including permanent provisions for living, sleeping, cooking, and sanitation.

Soo if the building we are talking about had two kitchens (along with all the bedrooms and baths mentioned) would it then be considered two-family? Three kitchens Multi-family?

I guess that still wouldn't be "independent"

I've always thought of it having to be separated by the utilities
