Is anyone aware of any NFPA or Governmental document that requires a remote shutdown switch for a standby generator in a healthcare facilty?
This was requested by an inspector at Walter Reed Hospital.

Thanks
Brian Dolan

Brian,
The transfer switch is your shutdown. It makes no sense to me to have a remote shutdown for a generator. Get the inspector to explain it in detail. or maybe one of the forum members can explain it? Then you can let us know the answer.

NFPA 110 3-5.5.6

All Level 1 and Level 2 installations shall have a remote manual stop station of a type similar to a break-glass station located outside the room housing the prime mover...

Appendix A: For Level 1 and Level 2 systems located outdoors, the manual shutdown should be located external to the weatherproof enclosure and should be appropriately identified.

This is how it reads for NFPA 110 2005 , You can preview the document here,...http://www.nfpa.org/aboutthecodes/AboutTheCodes.asp?DocNum=110 click preview this document towards the bottom of the page.

110-31 Log #54 Final Action: Accept
in Principle in Part
( 5.6.5.6 )
________________________________________________________________
Submitter: Tom Christman Knoxville, TN
Recommendation: Revise text as noted by deleting requirement for glassbreak
station:
All Level 1 and Level 2 installations shall have a remote manual stop station
of a type similar to a break glass station located outside the room housing the
prime mover, where so installed, or elsewhere on the premises where the prime
mover is located outside the building.
Add a new Section 5.6.5.6.1 The remote manual stop station shall be labeled.
Substantiation: The wording of the existing section requires a specific type
of stop switch. This type of switch could easily be confused with a manual pull
station that is connected to the fire alarm system. The type of switch used is not
important. A simple push switch similar to an abort switch is also an appropriate
type switch to shut down the unit.
The current section does not require the manual shut down switch to be
labelled. The annex material for the section indicates that the switch ?should?
be labelled. If it is important to have a manual shutdown switch, it should be
equally important to have the switch properly labelled as to its function. The
requirement for adding the labelling to the manual shut down switch clearly
identifies the function of the switch whether a glass-break unit or some other
type of switch is used.
Committee Meeting Action: Accept in Principle in Part
Revise the Proposal to read as follows:
All Level 1 and Level 2 installations shall have a remote manual stop station
of a type to prevent inadvertent or unintentional operation, of a type similar to
a break glass station located outside the room housing the prime mover, where
so installed, or elsewhere on the premises where the prime mover is located
outside the building.
Add a new Section 5.6.5.6.1 The remote manual stop station shall be labeled.
Committee Statement: This language clarifies the intent of the submitter, and
removed the specific reference to a break glass station.
Number Eligible to Vote: 18
Ballot Results: Affirmative: 18
Comment on Affirmative:
DELERNO: The phrase ?where so installed? (in existing text) is meaningless
and should be removed.
