What is the typical earth cable? Does it depend on the loads? Sometimes they used a 2 AWG, 4 AWG wire here, Do earth cable needs to be calculated?

Thank you!!!

God Bless...

Do you mean Grounding Electrode Conductor?

That would be 250.66

The use of the term "earth cable" caused my eyebrows to rise, and upon investigation the OPs profile states his location is Qatar. Quite what electrical standards are used in Qatar is well outside my knowledge.

But in answer to the question, the earth cable needs to be of appropriate size, and determining the appropriate size can be a question of one or more of calculation, tables in books, experience, and custom and practice.

Earth Cable...

Yes!!! The Engineer sometimes specify on his note(s);

Use # 6 AWG + Earth Cable... for the earth cable sometime(s) he will used
# 4 AWG and sometimes # 2 AWG etc.

the earth cable needs to be of appropriate size, what do you mean about it? should be calculated depending on the load(s)? Or I can just use bigger size cable?

Thank you!!!

The "earth cable" is about the same as a "ground wire", in both the EGC and GEC usage.

Appropriate size means appropriate size. You will need to consult whatever standards apply to Qatar.

The size (AWG) of the GEC (Grounding Electrode Conductor) is from the 2005 National Electrical Code Table 250.66.

This is the wire that connects the service neutral to earth. The service neutral is larger.

Ground...

Isn't it earth and ground cable are just the same? I'm just confuse why my engineer use different size(s). I think I have found the answer in Table 250.122...

Thank you much...

Eduardo
