"Earth Ground"

On Friday I connected an overflow alarm for a fuel oil tank. The instructions said, " connect a # 12 copper wire from the sensor terminal marked "Earth Ground" to a good earth ground. The ground connection must be within 1 OHM of true ground and must be made at only one point for the system to maintain instrinsic safety." What exactly does this mean? Is this different then the EGC?

It sounds more like a GEC to me. It also sounds like the author of that instruction has no idea what he or she is talking about.

My guess is that the manufacturer is concerned with static charge. The sensor probably does not have an egc installed with the sensor wiring. If you did indeed install an egc with the sensor wiring, this will prevent the possibility of static build-up.

I would contact the manufacturer and ask them what they expect the grounding of the device will accomplish.
