Earth leakage

Hi guy's new to the site and from the looks of things, seems to be very interesting:smile:

I have a small problem with a circuit, going to a DB in which it goes through an Earth Leakage breaker 40A - 100mA, before the main 32A breaker.

During wet weather, the ELB keeps tripping.

I know these can be nuisance trips due to the small current leaking but I'm going to megger the circuit using 500V.

Would this be the quickest and easiest way to check for fault on the circuit?

Circuit is 230VAC

Thanks in advance.

Is this circuit or any part of the circuit outdoors. If there is a receptacle outdoors on the circuit that is getting wet then it could cause the gfci to trip.

Check the weatherproof covers. If it is all inside then I don't know what to tell you.

I think it's European for GFPE. DB might be Distribution Board?

Yes, and yes.

Even though the OP helpfully noted the circuit voltage as 230VAC, a very non-American voltage, the other giveaway is the 32A breaker, 32A being a European style rating.

Yep, meggering in the wet should find the problem...

ahh the real question is whether to use a 500 or 1000V meggar..depends on the amount of damage you can incurr..make sure you remove or physically disconnect every thing on the circuit involved.. then make sure the piece of equipment is able to be meggared and then meg each on seperatly..takes more time yet more accurate..

edited to add: Welcome to the party and remember to use a designated typer after viewing to many..

If you have an Amp Clamp that will read in the miliamp range, clamp it around

both (hot) conductors it will show what is not coming back.

Thanks for the help guy's.

It is indeed European kit we use and you are correct for DB and ELB.

I have a connection outdoors to which I thought was totally waterproof, will obviously need to re-check that.

cschmid, yep, will remove all terminals before hand, don't want to pass 500V into the other circuitry.

Thanks again, really helpful forum.

diffrence bet gfci socket and (socket with earh leakage)

diffrence bet gfci socket and (socket with earh leakage)

for basement floor (under ground)same garge there is i can use weather proof socket in basement and rooms in basement or this needed only in open area in basement but not needed in basement rooms?
what the diffrence bet gfci socket and (socket with earh leakage and weather proof)?
is the gfci in bathrooms must be earh leakage ?
