Hey does anyone know what year it became effective in California to install AFCI breakers in bedroom receptacles.

Do you also know what the Ca electric code it applied to.

It has always been bedroom "outlets" and not just receptacles, it first was in the 1999 NEC and California is always a few years behind. I am not 100% sure but I think it was 2002 that California started to enforce it.

It was not always bedroom outlets. In the 1999 code it AFCI's were only required for bedroom "receptacle "outlets. That was changed in 200

It was in 99 but it wasnt really enforced at least in my area untill 02. California is adopting 08 starting in Janurary. We usually run about three years behind

Thanks but I highly doubt that Ca adopted it in 99 as it first appeared in the nec 1999. The reason I need to know is because of a code compliance issue. I need to know if that code cycle applied in the year of the building.

From the 2001 CEC based on the 1999 NEC

(b) Dwelling Unit Bedrooms. All branch circuits that supply 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacle outlets installed in dwelling unit bedrooms shall be protected by an arc-fault circuit interrupter(s). This requirement shall become effective January 1, 2002.

Don't forget it is the date the permit was issued, not the final. It could even be when the plans were accepted for plan check, if you are that close on the dates.
