The correct type of rope is very important, but there are ropes that are suitable that are not sold as pulling ropes. I just bought a 1/2" 12 strand single braid rope that has all of the characteristics of the double braided pulling rope, except it has the same stength as the 7/8" pulling rope. I have a long pull in a 2" conduit where the pulling tension will exceed that of a 3/4" pulling rope and 3/4" is about the biggest you can use with 2" conduit. And as with all cable pulling the proper rope is a must. We prefer the Greenlee double braided type. They're very low stretch and rated for 4X the pulling strength of the puller.
