do any cable pullers start at less than 2 grand? I don't need 4000 lbs. pull normally, just a bit more than two guys can do without a hernia.

Would this style work?

Site "says" MAXIS 3000X Tugger $2150.00...

I couldn't be happier with the Milwaukee tools I have. My hole hawg is from 1985, and still going strong, although it has had repairs. Thnks for the link.

My 10+ year old right-angle died...weighing the odds on a $100+ repair bill to last how long?...vs. buying a new $250(probably get it for under $200 with some discounts) drill to last how long?

Maxis is NOT the "only" here. I think GreenLee makes on too (and get a free hat while you are that site)...GB, probably has one...there are a few on the market.

Good luck.

Our shop purchased some brand new milwaukee cordless drills a few months ago. already one of the drills died and was sent back for repair and one battery is near dead.

I was really surprised.

I have the Maxis 1000. It works good for the pulls you mention.(2 men).

It cost <400.00 and you need to use your Hole Hawg with it.

Tom

I used it to pull in some 750Kcmil Al ONE time in a pinch. I wouldn't recommend it for that though....

I've recently gotten the Raytools one like Celtic mentioned.

That 1000 is probably all i need and i already have the old style hole hawg it shows. I saw a Greenlee manual one for 625 that looked OK as well.

No contest - replace it.

I purchased a greenlee ultra tugger II for about 1500.00. I was real pleased with the job it done. You can adjust for overhead or floor pulls in a matter of seconds.

maxis 3000 is the bomb

maxis 3000 is the bomb

and you get a superhawg with it that is the ultimate of all right angle drills win win. dont use bigger than 3/4 auger bits with the milwaulkee cordless and you will stop burning them out

I have the Maxis and think it's phenomenal. The Ray Tools puller looks like a copycat with some improvements. I'd look into that if I were buying another one. Not sure what the differences are, but I'd look into both of them.

The Maxis is an excellent tool. For the money I would highly recommend it. It does have it limits however. For the next level pulling I would recommend the Green Super Tugger. We have also used the Gardner Bender Tugger but it has some drawbacks over the Greenlee. For one the pipe sheave adapter is lame. We have had the unit actually slide down the conduit during a pull. That has never happened with the Greenlee which has better chains and teeth on the sheave to hold on to the pipe.

And as with all cable pulling the proper rope is a must. We prefer the Greenlee double braided type. They're very low stretch and rated for 4X the pulling strength of the puller.

The correct type of rope is very important, but there are ropes that are suitable that are not sold as pulling ropes. I just bought a 1/2" 12 strand single braid rope that has all of the characteristics of the double braided pulling rope, except it has the same stength as the 7/8" pulling rope. I have a long pull in a 2" conduit where the pulling tension will exceed that of a 3/4" pulling rope and 3/4" is about the biggest you can use with 2" conduit.
