Hi, is an electric car charging receptacle required by the NEC for a house that has a garage? or a driveway? Or is this optional?
Thanks!
Thanks!
The branch circuit and at least one receptacle on it are mandatory, as the language says. I believe the intention was to allow for at least Level 1 (12A @ 120V) car charging in garages. No garage, no requirement.Thanks.... but it doesn't mention anything about using a receptacle for car charging... so is this optional?
Minor compared to the benefits, but let's stop at one extraneous comment each.As of now, thankfully yes. Imagine the extra costs involved if it were not.

So the receptacle is required when you have a garage. But it’s purpose can be for anything. Not by the NEC. But there may be other codes. In California there are requirements for new construction to account for it. For example a single family dwelling with an attached garage be built with a 40A circuit for EV charging or a 1" raceway for future installation.Hi, is an electric car charging receptacle required by the NEC for a house that has a garage? or a driveway? I'm imagining the costs of retrofitting recently built or remodeled housing that doesn't have it to be substantially more.As of now, thankfully yes. Imagine the extra costs involved if it were not.

Not familiar with the NYC codes, but a quick google search turned up:Anyone know if a particular code in NYC requires it?
