Hello. New to the forum. Trying to figure out the maximum size 220V EV charger that I can put into my detached garage.
The panel in the garage sits 150 feet from the panel in the house. The connecting wiring is 8/3 with ground in the house connecting to THHN/THWN #8 conductors in PVC conduit which runs from the house to the panel in the garage.
All of the wiring in the garage is 12/2. There are (3) 1/2 hp garage door openers which quote 6 amps each plus two receptacles on a 20 amp breaker circuit and 4 LED lights and one receptacle on a 15 amp breaker circuit which pulls from the other hot leg. My plan is to move one of the one of the openers to the that circuit to better balance the current with the charger installed.
The #8 220 circuit is protected with 30 amp breakers but am planning on increasing those to 40 amp.
What is the highest amperage charger that I can put on the 220 circuit? I am thinking 20 amps but wondering if I can go to 24.
