I am designing the electrical power distribution to a machine like this. It is my first time working with a piece of machinery exposed to such elements. I have a contact out to the factory, but before I hear back from them, I was curious if anyone has worked around these kind of machines before? Its a electric (boogy woogy woogy). It draws 116kW worth of load at 480V. I am thinking #1/0 - 4 Wire PPE (Portable Power Cable), with a breakaway cord and plug connection, and GFI protection.

Doing some more research... I'm now considering Type W cable instead. There is a roof, so it would not be exposed to direct sunlight

Whatever kind of cable you use I would think you would want some kind of cable track to install it in instead of letting the cable drag on the ground.
I was thinking about that. I really didn't like the cable laying around like that either.

Or depending on the distance you could do a cord reel. Underground mining equipment uses cord reels to keep the power cable from getting run over. Not cheap either, though I'm sure the machine was pretty expensive too!

Unless you also have some rollers or something similar for cable to ride on you still getting abrasion on cable sheath from dragging it on the surface, something to consider.

with a breakaway cord and plug connection

Not sure if this helps but MELTRIC offers this for breakaway cord and plug connections. There are some considerations that need to be taken into account if you are going to use a solution like this.

Self-Ejecting - All (meltric.com)

Probably going to get beat up about suggesting equipment from a company I work for but it's the only one I know of that does something like this at this moment in time. If someone else knows of something similar I'm always interested in learning more about what is out there.

You should petition the NFPA to make them mandated equipment for electric car chargers. :)

I don't believe NEC has ever mandated use of a product that is only offered by one manufacturer.

Think that is why you on occasion have seen an application date mentioned in code - to allow others time finish development of a similar product.

I acutally spec'd that product prior to your post, but thanks. I'm glad to see someone else knows them. They are sending me a sample.
