what does a short tube do to the transformer? i cant find it in the code book all i can find is electric discharge for lighting

Overload it
Neon tubing is rated for voltage by a combination of diameters x length.

if you try to put more voltage than is required the load on the transformer the current will go up. the light will get brighter though. But the transformer has to be able to handle this higher load.
