Just for clarification even though it's not related to question. Heater is wired correct with 2 pole 40amp breaker and 8/2 wire run to it.

We have a 7500w electric garage heater. The internal thermostat seems to be hit or miss so there is an option for an external thermostat. However the one they recommend, probably because it's their brand is a simple dial style that has bad reviews of being accurate. We want to use a nicer programable thermostat with screen. We want to use the Honeywell RLV4305A which is still a heat only line voltage thermostat for electric heaters.

The Honeywell line voltage t-stat has a max rating of 3500w heater but the one the Heater suggests to use is the Dr Heater DR-001 line voltage t-stat that has max of 7756w. This would explains itself if it seemed to be an actual line voltage t-stat was needed.

Here is where the confusion and question comes in. The instructions for the 7500w heater say to use two non-polarized 16awg wires to run to the thermostat. One of the Q&A someone asked if they could use 14awg wire and they said it wouldn't fit in the thermostat terminals in the heater itself and it needed to be 16awg as explained in the heater instructions. That almost sounds like it doesn't need a line voltage thermostat because 16awg would never handle that much power. I think 16awg can handle max of 1650w at short distance? It seems like the thermostat wires are more to control an inner circuit contained in the heater. Does this seem like I could use the thermostat we want to use?

Any help or insight on this would be much appreciated. Thank you.
